FAQ

What is the Regional Cycling Calendar?

The Regional Cycling Calendar is a collaborative project among participating cycling groups and organizations in northern and central New Jersey. It is a one-stop calendar, where all cycling events in the region are posted.

How can my group or organization participate in the Regional Cycling Calendar?

To participate, please choose your group’s representative and email brickcitybikecollective@gmail.com with the subject “Regional Calendar Sharing”.

Do I have to be tech savvy to participate in the Regional Calendar?

No. Google’s interface is extremely easy to use, even for those not familiar with computers. If you do need tech support, a BCBC representative would love to help.

Why use Google Calendar?

Google is amazing. Google Calendar enables:

(1) It’s free!

(2) It’s easy.

(3) Different colors represent each cycling group.

(4) Each group manages its own calendar (with editing capabilities) and views other groups’ calendars (without editing capabilities). This helps keep any “spam” posts away.

(5) Each group picks and chooses which calendars they would like to appear on their site.

How does the sharing work?

One representative from each cycling group has sharing and editing privileges for each participating group’s Calendar. A virtual list of representatives is maintained by BCBC and shared with all groups. When a new group wants to participate, an email is sent to all current group representatives connecting them with the new group’s representative. Then, all groups share their calendars with the newcomer, and the newcomer shares its calendar with everyone else. The last step is for participating groups to embed the updated Regional Calendar on their website.

I’ve become a participating group. How do I share my group’s Calendar with the other groups?

Open your group’s Google Calendar. On the left-hand column, under “My Calendars”, click the arrow next to your calendar’s name. A drop down menu will appear. Go to “Share This Calendar”. First, make sure the box is checked next to “Make this calendar public.” Then, under “Share with specific people”, add each email address representing each cycling group. Make sure each email added has its Permission Settings set to “Make changes AND manage sharing”.

I’ve become a participating group. How do I embed the Regional Calendar on my website?

Open your group’s Google Calendar. On the left-hand column, under “My Calendars”, click the arrow next to your calendar’s name. A drop down menu will appear. Go to “Calendar Settings”. Find the “Embed This Calendar” section. Then, go to “Customize the color, size, and other options”. This will bring you to the Google Embeddable Calendar Helper. Choose the options you would like in the left-hand column. Under “Calendars to display”, make sure to check each organization’s calendar you would like to appear on your site. Next, copy and paste the HTML at the top of the page to include this calendar on your webpage.

My group also posts non-cycling events on our calendar. Can we still participate?

Yes, but in order to keep the Regional Cycling Calendar uncluttered we ask you to reorganize your events. Either (1) Create a separate calendar for non-cycling events; or (2) Set all non-cycling events to “Private” under “edit event details”.
