Where: Meet at Beaver Street near Broad (by the Starbucks and Rainbow)

When: Friday, May 6th at 7pm

The Route: We start out at Beaver St, head up Ferry into the Ironbound, cross the Jackson St Bridge and head up past the RedBull Arena. Then we criss-cross over to 3rd, go left down the hill on Central then turn onto Grant. We’ll pass PicNic BBQ and the mobile home police station, then merge with Belgrove. On Belgrove we’ll have excellent views of the Passaic River valley and Newark, we’ll see a ridiculous flagpole, lots of beautiful churches and houses, and the most upscale neighborhood of Kearny.

Then we’ll head across Kearny Ave to Chestnut where we’ll see the entrance to the abandon rail line/train bridge ride we’ll be proposing for a Sunday afternoon. We.ll drop down to Elm because there’s more to look at, then back up to Kearny Ave on Belleville Turnpike.

At this point we can decide to come back down Kearny Ave and glide downhill through West Essex Park, or enjoy the long downhill down to the Passaic River to either return on River Road in Kearny or cross the bridge into Belleville to return down Broadway, Mt.Prospect or Branchbrook Park.

Also, at the end of the ride I’m heading to a show at the Irish on 95 Kearny Ave see Jersey’s own rock ‘n’ roll power trio Screaming Females and post-punk rockers No Pasaran joined by Brooklyn’s Ben Franklin and Connecticut’s Eula. You’re welcome to join me for a good time. Check out the Facebook invite, if you’re interested: http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=157130091013067

2nd Annual Branchbrook Park Cherry Blossom Bike Tour - Sunday April 11 at 1pm, an easy family-friendly ride through Branchbrook Parks famous cherry blossom groves. See http://www.brickcitybikecollective.org for details and maps.

Saturday, April 16 @ 1pm

This year’s tour is dedicated to the fallen sakura bikers of Japan.

The weather has turned against us. A cold spring has left us with fewer blossoms to look at than we would have liked, and tomorrow’s forecast calls for intermittent thunderstorms. So we have decided to notify everyone that we’ve added another tour date … next Saturday, April 16 @ 1pm. (12:30 sign-up)

YES, there ARE some blossoms on the trees and YES, they are beautiful and YES, we will still be hosting the tour tomorrow for those cherry blossom fans who didn’t get the message or can’t make it next week. Some of the small trees have blossoms already but the really nice ones… the exotic weepy ones, the tall majestic ones, the old knarly-branched ones, the ones reflected in the lake, and the ones you can’t resist taking pictures in front of for your Facebook page… those are just beginning to show buds and will be absolutely gorgeous next weekend!

So take your pick of days but we highly suggest next weekend for the WOW factor!

Sorry for the late notice. Please pass the word!

This is not a race or tour of Newark. This is a fun theme ride for the whole family. You’ll be seeing all of Branchbrook Park and a few surrounding neighborhoods. But, mostly, you’ll be here to see a breathtaking collection of cherry trees at peak bloom!

We’ve made the route a bit easier this year to accommodate trikes and kids (you won’t be lifting your bike over railroad tracks . We also have more assistants and staff this year to help you fix your bike, help with traffic crossings and find your way around. In order to maximize your blossom time, we’ll be giving you a map of paths through groves that we suggest you walk your bike through instead of seeing it all from the road.

New date: Saturday, April 16.
Time: 1pm (signup @ 12:30pm)
Length: approx. 8 miles
Ride level: easy
Cost: Free ($5 per person suggested)

Maps of the tour route will be handed to everyone who registers on the day of the event.

In case of questionable weather the day of the event, come back to the BCBC website that morning for a postponement notice.

To print the map below, click on it, then print it.

You can park anywhere in the park along the road (please don’t park in the roller rink parking lot). Or you can park in the Cathedral parking lot at the corner of Clifton & Park if it’s not too full (turn left onto Victoria then Right onto Ridge).

DIRECTIONS

From the east:
* Interstate 280 to Clifton Avenue exit.
* Turn right onto Clifton Avenue
* Your first left off Clifton will be the park entrance.
* Park when you see the lake & fountain on your right (you can park along the curb in the park, or you can park in the Cathedral parking lot)
* We meet next to the lake, across from the fountain and cathedral.

From the west:
You can exit at the Newark/UMDNJ exit then turn left at the light onto 1st Street but we recommend the M.L.K. exit (see below)
* Interstate 280 to Rev. Martin Luther King Blvd. exit.
* Turn left at the light onto Rev. Martin Luther King Blvd.
* Turn left at the light onto 7th Avenue
* Go to the end then turn right onto Clifton Avenue.
* Your first left off Clifton will be the park entrance.
* Park when you see the lake & fountain on your right (you can park along the curb in the park, or you can park in the Cathedral parking lot)
* We meet next to the lake, across from the fountain and cathedral.

From Broad Street Station:
* Exit the station and look for the light rail tracks on the south (sunny) side of the station.
* Turn right at the tracks and head along the south side of the station to the next street (Rev. Martin Luther King Blvd.)
* Turn right onto Rev. Martin Luther King Blvd. and proceed under the overpasses.
* Turn left at the next light onto 7th Avenue.
* Go to the end then turn right onto Clifton Avenue.
* Your first left off Clifton will be the park entrance.
* Meet at the lakeside in front of the fountain.
Distance: 3/4 mile

From Penn Station: biking
* Exit the station’s main entrance.
* Turn right and go in the direction of traffic to the traffic light at Raymond Blvd. where the road dead-ends across from a tall building.
* Turn left onto Raymond Blvd. and follow it through town, up the hill and around to the NJIT campus. At this point Raymond Blvd. turns into Lock Street.
* Keep going straight through a few lights until it merges with Nesbitt.
* Turn left onto Nesbitt and go to the end where the road merges with the I-280 off-ramp & on-ramp. There will be a very tall building at the corner in front of you. Keep to the right side because this is a bit of a hairy corner on a bike.
* At the light you can either cross the street and enter the park or…
* Turn right at the light onto Clifton Avenue and proceed up the hill (between the park and a large building).
* Your first left off Clifton will be the park entrance.
* Meet at the lakeside in front of the fountain.
Distance: 2.1 miles

From Penn Station: NJ Transit Light Rail
* Yes, you can take your bike on the light rail on the weekends!
* Take the NJ Transit light rail system (ground floor entry near McDonald’s) to the Park Avenue station (not the Branchbrook Park station).
* Exit the station and bike across the street into the park.
* Note: when you buy a ticket (maybe $1.50 or so) you still need to validate it before getting on the train. Get it punched/validated in the orange boxes found in the lobby and track-side. They look like fire alarm boxes.

Last year we had about 100 riders. This year we’re ready for more! Please tell everyone about this event.

Colorado seems to have invented the bike pub crawl, Fort Collins has one every Sunday, Colorado Springs does it on Thursdays and Denver does it every Wednesday, with upwards of 3,000 people…and a theme! Of course Austin, Portland and San Francisco have also gotten in on the action. A group called, Eat, Drink, and Ride Bikes Chicago, even came up with 7 steps to organizing a bike pub crawl.

So why do it? As the Chicago group sums it up, “Bicycle pub crawls are like a house party you don’t have to clean up after, with moving scenery and random, fun people.”

So lets join the fun spreading across the nation and get together this coming Saturday the 16th at 5pm at 27 Mix, 27 Halsey Street, Newark, which has offered our group weekday happy hour rates! Maps will be distributed for those inclined to drink a little longer and possibly get left behind. A drink “scavenger hunt” will also be available for those that like to drink with a goal in mind. The winner takes all….the glory!

After 27Mix we make 2 more stops in Newark, head into Belleville, cross the bridge into North Arlington for a few stiff ones, then drink our way south through Kearny pub row (Kearny Ave.) ending up at The Green Room in Harrison…or beyond! Maybe 8-10 thirst-quenching stops in all! Plus, we have a few surprise stops for you that we know you’ll enjoy, including Pizzaland.

The the rest of the ride is downhill on wide, well-lit roads. We will finish up right by the Harrison PATH station if you don’t feel like crossing one of the bridges back into Newark on bike. Don’t forget your helmet or bike lights. And, as always, you ride at your own risk

And don’t worry, we aren’t doing 21 Bike Pub Crawl Stops like these Aussie guys did! See you Saturday!

START:
5pm (new start time)

One of the things I love about life is spontaniety. Last Thursday (September 30) after a rather boring and unmotivated day I found myself on Facebook reading that fellow BCBC’er Tim had the day off and wanted to know if anyone was up for an afternoon ride. This was just the motivation I needed to get out of my house and on two wheels. We met met up on Park Avenue and rode on a bike trail that connects all the long linear parks between Branchbrook Park and Hoffman LaRoche on Rte. 3 in Clifton. We took off throughout the park, passing a golf course, and some great scenery. We ended up at the Clifton Commons. I recongzied the area, so we decided to explore it a little. We could see the Barnes & Noble and Applebees, but we went on the other side and stopped into Chevy’s. Turns out on Thursday they have a $2 beer special and it was happy hour, so we got a Margarita with some tamales, rice and beans. Then we blazed back so we wouldn’t get caught too much in the dark. I took the light rail back to Newark Penn Station and rode home from there and that was the end to a nice night. My single speed still rocks the trails! Sometimes you just have to get out and ride and see where you end up. You might just find an area you love. That’s the beauty of bike riding. You take in the scenery and discover new places. Just check out some of the sweet photos below.

Art/Cycle ride map for May 2010

To celebrate bicycles and art, May’s First Friday Ride will make a quick 45 minute sweep of public art downtown and in University Heights, then end at the Art Cycle opening night at Index Art Center on Broad Street. In keeping with the art/cycle theme, this month’s ride is creative…we’ll spend almost as much time on paths and walkways as on roads (wide & seldom used walkways, that is), take in murals, statues, sculptures, fountains and artistic architectural features. We’ll wind our way through maybe 6 parks, 3 universities and a few hidden historic gems… all in about 45 minutes.

The tour starts out in deep city passing two beautiful train terminals along the way, then heads slowly, diagonally, painlessly uphill to Newark’s largest public sculpture on Bergen Street. Then it’s almost a continuous coast downhill from there.

I’d like to start at 7pm if possible, 7:15 at the latest. Let me know if that’s too early for everyone. A larger map for printing is available here: art tour map

Cheers!

70 cyclists turned out for BCBC’s First Annual Tour of the Cherry Blossoms on April 11, 2010. Turnout was greater than expected for this 5-mile ride in and around Newark’s Branch Brook Park. The weather was beautiful, and the park was busy with cyclists and patrons alike. The route winded through areas of the park inundated with Cherry Blossom trees, over bridges, on the streets of the historic Forest Hills section of Newark, and past other Newark gems, like the converted Tiffany building and the oldest house in Newark. It was a great event, and we learned a lot as a group about preparing for large rides. I hope to see you all next year!
BCBC is pleased to announce our first annual Cherry Blossom Bike Tour!

Please join the Brick City Bike Collective as we tour Branchbrook Park’s spectacular display of cherry blossoms at their peak.

Sunday, April 11
1pm
Meet at the twin lion statues across from the fountain in the park’s southernmost lake. See map below or view/download a larger one here: http://tsoup.com/bcbc/branchbrook%20map.jpg

Newark’s Branchbrook Park is famous for it’s cherry trees and Cherry Blossom
Festival. This year the actual Cherry Blossom Festival is on the 18th but we
will be taking the tour on the much less crowded Sunday before which we
estimate to be the peak day for blossoms.
See photos here: http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/937513?start=0

The tour will be about 7 miles in length and last maybe 1.5 hours. This is not a race, it is a leisurely tour on a route that takes in the park, some surrounding neighborhoods, notable and historic architecture, lakes, fountains and the largest display of cherry trees east of Kyoto. This free tour is an easy, enjoyable ride for any age group.

You can park anywhere in the park. There is a running race in the park that morning but southern park gates should open for car traffic by 11am or so. The park is easily accessible from the parkway, Turnpike, I-280, Bloomfield Avenue or Route 21. It’s also very near NJ Transit Newark Broad Street Station, and an easy trek from Newark Penn Station.

If you have any questions please contact Tim at tim @ tsoup . com
Come see the surprising beauty of NJ’s largest city! Hope to see you there!

Philip Roth, arguably America’s greatest living writer, grew up in the Weequahic neighborhood of Newark and wrote about it extensively in the Pulitzer Prize winning “American Pastoral”. His home at 81 Summit Street was the destination of today’s ride.

It was a gorgeous day for the eight adventurers who showed up to ride. Bright sun, light traffic and remnants of last weeks’ snowfall that, seeming out of place at forty-four degrees, were a clear reminder of February’s fickle weather. We chose this predominantly north-south ride today because it faced us into the warm sun initially and kept us, for the most part, out of brisk western winter winds.

Among the sights we took in were both sections of Weequahic Park, a general tour of the Weequahic neighborhood, Philip Roth’s house, Weequahic High School, Newark Beth Israel Hospital, beautiful old houses along 11th and Littleton and the NJ School of Dentistry.
